I have a large yard and want to grow as much of my own food as possible and I’m currently looking at planting an apple tree or two. I want an apple that would be good for baking, eating, and possibly making cider if one exists that will cover all three. I’d also like it to be available in a dwarf variety to help me maximize my space. Thanks in advance for any advice or help.

Wow large yard that’s always good news  😀

I have elstar growing which are great for eating-baking (they stay firm, not suited to applesauce so well), but they’re only used for cider as an add-on here in Europe I think each cider orchard has their own special variety. What’s for sure is that any type of apple can be used to make cider, or even mixed varieties. It boils down to learning which give what taste I guess.

Looking around I saw that Golden delicious is used for all of your uses but I don’t know if it’s really a dwarf variety maybe simply prune it so it stays small?

    Hello,

If you want apples, you need two apple-trees ; the second must blow at the same time than the first, on your own yard or not far away, on a neighbour-yard.

Good tasting varieties, for eating and baking are per ex. Braeburn, Delbard Jubilée, Jonagold.

The french name “pommier colonne” is a form of apple-tree which needs only a small place ; it’s not a dwarf variety, but it isn’t big (not large) and not very tall.

Is your yard in France or in Great-Britain ?

Personally I do not advise Braeburn who is good but too sensitive to diseases. I recommend the “Reinette Clochard”. It is not specially a cider apple, but is excellent for eating and baking. I think it’s the apple that I prefer. It can be kept all winter until the end of April and even in May, but then its skin becomes wrinkled, but the flesh remains good. In addition, it is fairly resistant to diseases, especially scab. It is necessary that there be another apple tree to fertilize it for example: Chailleux, Tentation, Grand’Mère, Reine des Reinettes, Reinette de Caux, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith. This apple has served as a parent to several other apples, especially Belchard marketed in France under the name of Chantecler. This is a cross between her and Golden Delicious.

Probably that the English apple tree “Cox’s orange pippin” (good apple) which is a very good pollinator is likely to pollinate “Reinette Clochard” It is also necessary to know that a bee is able to traverse 4 kilometers and the apple trees of the neighbors can fertilize the your.

    Bonjour,

    “Pommier colonne” = columnar apple-tree.

Sorry : Braeburn is not a good choice. Good apple, but to much diseases.

    D.
